Frugal food alert: Impala Cantina y Taqueria

If you have a craving for tacos and are cash poor but don't want to subject yourself to a certain taco chain's not so meaty meat, head over to Impala's on H street. That's where a friend of mine celebrated her birthday this past Saturday. Their tacos are hearty, tasty, and made fresh with a variety of fillings to choose from and their taco shells are all made in-house. While deciding what you want to eat they offer complimentary chips and salsa. And the prices are so reasonable! The most expensive taco on the menu is a grand total of $4 and on Tuesdays, tacos are discounted by $1. They have plenty of other items on the menu but the focus of this post is the tacos.
I ordered 3 tacos: the carne asada, the braised pork, and the chorizo. All of them were delicious and super filling; I started feeling full after the second one. It may not be as cheap as Baco Tell, but the food quality for the price is awesome. And I want you to love you enough to eat real food, lol. I took a shot of the taco portion of the menu:

As you can see, there's something on there for everybody, meat eater and non meat eater alike. The atmosphere and decor are very laid back. It felt like I was sitting in someone's kitchen. The staff is super nice, engaging, and very accommodating.
If you want some tequila to go with your taco, they've got you. Their tequila shots are standard prices (about $7) but the shots are about twice the size you're going to get anywhere else. I would definitely recommend this place if you're in the mood for authentic Mexican food and don't want to pay out the nose.
Impala is located at 1358 H St. NW. The X2 bus will drop you right in front of it. It's right in the middle of all the H St. activity so you can eat and go party or vice versa. Happy eating!
